Custom Weather & Wind Forecasting Web App — My Awning Warning

Disruptive Mining Tech developed My Awning Warning, a lightweight but highly personalised weather forecasting web application built specifically for caravanners and grey nomads travelling across Australia. The tool solves a deceptively simple problem that every caravan owner knows well: knowing when to put the awning down before the wind does it for you.

The app uses the device's geolocation to deliver real-time, hyper-local weather conditions and a rolling 24-hour and 7-day forecast, with configurable wind gust and temperature thresholds that trigger colour-coded caution and alarm zones tailored to each user's preferences. Solar generation forecasting is also built in — a practical addition for travellers managing off-grid power on the road.

DMT engineered the application with a privacy-first architecture; location data never leaves the user's browser, with all reverse geocoding handled via OpenStreetMap/Nominatim and weather data sourced from Open-Meteo. The result is a fast, dependency-light tool that works reliably in low-connectivity environments — exactly the conditions travellers face on remote Australian roads.

Thoughtful UX details set it apart: users can configure how far ahead of sunset they want to be warned, factor in whether they're willing to manage the awning at night, and manually enter coordinates when GPS isn't available.
